What insurance is available for consumers with chronic conditions? Will the new law help them get better coverage?

Yes, under the ACA insurance companies can't refuse to insure consumers with chronic or preexisting medical conditions, exclude coverage for preexisting conditions, or charge higher premiums because of a health or medical condition. The ACA also requires insurance companies in the individual and small employer markets to offer more comprehensive coverage than is currently available for some people with chronic illnesses. It prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, disability, or expected length of life. Coverage for these benefits is available from the beginning of the policy coverage period, without a waiting period, even if there was no prior coverage.
