Must small employers offer health care insurance coverage to their employees?

No. The ACA doesn't require small employers (defined as employers with fewer than 50 employees) to offer health insurance coverage to their employees. Small employers who want to provide coverage may be eligible for a tax credit to help make insurance more affordable.

If the employer does offer coverage, however, the coverage must meet ACA's minimum standards for all insurance plans, as well as specific requirements that apply to the small employer market, such as coverage of the essential health benefits.

In Nebraska, the SHOP Marketplace for Small Businesses is a place where small employers can purchase coverage for their employees.
